Fun German Words

  • Wodka-It is pronounced the same as vodka but looks cooler and more exotic.
  • Spezi-It seemed like such a fascinating drink option on the menu, and after discovering that it was a mix of coke and orange pop, I remained fascinated.  I love the idea in theory, but didn't really fancy the actual beverage.  However, I remain a big fan of the name.  Spezi, so posh sounding for orange coke.
  • Kopfkissen-Kopf is head and Kissen is cushion. It's a pillow, but the name evokes images of cushions literally kissing your noggin.
  • Shifffahrt-ship voyage.  three f's.
  • Handschuhe-yes, hand shoes=Gloves.
  • Kurzmachen-short making.  It's a term for alteration we learned when buying Jeremy his replacement suit.
  • Schmusen-to cuddle.  It's a false cognate, not something you'd do at the golf course with business partners you're trying to impress.
  • Löwen-the umlaut makes you pronounce it lerrven.  Lions never sounded so fun.  I love anything with umlauts.
  • Gabel-pronounced like a turkey sound.  fork.
  • Bleib-the command form of stay.  I like the sound and the command form.  I hear this all the time, moms telling kids to bleib still (stay quiet), train announcers telling you to zurück bleiben (stay back).
  • Krankenschwester-translates to sick sister, means nurse.
  • Mietwagon-pronounced meat vagon.  It's a rental car.
  • Mannschaft-team.
  • Diskothek-some people still say it here, and it conjures hilarious images of clubgoers from the eighties.
  • Kugel-ball or sphere.  I use this word a lot in ordering ice cream. Just today I got a pfefferminz Kugel and an erdbeere Kugel.
I keep thinking of more.  I better save up for the exciting sequel.
