Our first hike in the Black Hills took us past this bluff,
by this beautiful ruin of a monastery set in the Vale of Ewyas,
and through a field belonging to a riding school.
My favorite part of this hike, other than the ubiquitous sheep,
great views,
and rams hiding in the ferns,
was an alpaca-like elderly hiker we caught up to when he stopped for breaks. We discussed the habits of the local monks, the beauty of the green fields that look almost glowing in the waning light, and his perceptions of Americans, which were based largely on his experience watching Judge Judy.
